DeKalb lines up $75M to start its biggest-ever housing push

Decide DeKalb agreed to administer $75 million of the county's $155 million housing bond, which aims to create or preserve more than 10,000 homes.

The Decide DeKalb Development Authority voted to run $75 million of the county's $155 million housing investment bond, the largest housing commitment in DeKalb's history. Commissioners approved the overall program in February and released a first $25 million tranche in July.

The money will fund down payment help for first-time buyers, repairs for longtime homeowners, gap financing for affordable and workforce housing, and the redevelopment of blighted properties. County officials expect the bond to draw more than $1.2 billion in total investment and help create or preserve over 10,000 homes on the way to a 15,000-unit goal by 2032.

Why it matters

It is a local government trying to fill the gap left by shrinking federal housing aid, and the scale is large enough to move affordability across the whole county rather than one project at a time.
